Suns' offense shines bright in second inning, overpowers West Virginia

The Hagerstown Suns scored eight runs in the second inning, then held on late for a 9-7 victory over the West Virginia Power on Monday night at Municipal Stadium.

The Suns (5-7 second half) had eight hits in the second. Eury Perez hit a two-run single, Jeff Kobernus followed with a two-run double, Steven Souza hit a three-run homer and J.P. Ramirez added an RBI double.

Hagerstown made it 9-0 in the third on Kobernus' RBI double.

West Virginia (3-9) got on the scoreboard with Elevys Gonzalez's two-run double in the fourth, then made things interesting with a five-run eighth. David Rubinstein hit a two-run double, Jesus Brito hit an RBI single and Kyle Morgan added a two-run double.

Suns reliever Rob Wort entered the game and induced a double-play grounder to get out of a bases-loaded jam and prevent further damage in the eighth. Dean Weaver earned his 11th save with a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit.

Ben Graham (1-0) earned the win for the Suns with three perfect innings in relief of starter Paul Applebee, who gave up three hits, two walks and two earned runs in four innings while striking out five.

Hagerstown knocked out West Virginia starter Jason Erickson (5-5) after 1 2/3 innings. Erickson allowed six hits and seven runs, all earned.
