Streets in North Hagerstown to be closed Saturday for cycling race

July 06, 2010

Beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, the Antietam Velo Club will present the Hagerstown Challenge Criterium cycling race in the north end of Hagerstown.

During the event, no through traffic will be allowed on the streets that comprise the race route, and no on-street parking will be allowed on those streets, according to Hagerstown officials.

The race route is a loop around portions of Woodland Way, West Irvin Avenue, West Hillcrest Road, The Terrace and Park Lane.

The Hagerstown Police Department and race organizers will direct traffic at the various street intersections around the race route. Local traffic will be allowed to use those streets to access their residences under the direction of police officers, the city said in a release.

Motorists approaching the race route should expect to encounter police officers, barricades, cones and temporary detour signs. Traffic delays are likely, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes away from the race area, the city said.

The races are scheduled to be completed by 4:30 p.m. Saturday and all streets should be reopened to traffic by 6 p.m., according to officials.

Emergency vehicles will be able to pass through the race route with coordination from the Hagerstown Police Department.

Anyone with questions may contact the city's Department of Community and Economic Development at 301-739-8577, ext. 183.
