As Washington County residents might have noticed, the organization formerly known as Maryland Cooperative Extension has a new name - University of Maryland Extension (UME), which is intended to strengthen public recognition of its university affiliation.

UME programs are based in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland-College Park and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, but made available to residents in every county and Baltimore City.

The new name formally recognizes this connection and UME's role as the outreach vehicle of university research and teaching.

In addition to the name change, local administration has been streamlined, which is intended to enhance and expand the educational programs and services that UME provides to residents.

In Western Maryland, Jennifer Bentlejewski now serves as the area Extension director, which is the point of contact for UME in Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties.

Bentlejewski began her career with UME in 1997 as a faculty member and has served in a number of leadership roles.
