The show goes on at Ice House Theater Camp

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- This year, 42 kids are attending the Ice House Theater Camp to learn about acting and to perform in a play at the end of the two-week program.

The program has become so popular in 12 years that this year's camp was moved to Berkeley Springs High School, said directors Brice Williams and Margi Griffiths.

Williams said they are teaching the kids acting techniques in the high school auditorium and the multipurpose area across the hallway. The children will perform in "Blather, Blarney and Balderdash," which are old Irish folk tales by Patrick Rainville Dorn.

The children range in age from 4 1/2 to 14 with about 17 helpers, he said.

They learn about costuming and participate in other activities, he said.

Griffiths' daughter, Dia, 18, one of the assistant directors, was in Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories," one of the original theater camp performances, Griffiths said.

Williams' son, Walker, 17, is the musical director and has also been a camp member.

Aidan McDaniel, 13, said he has probably attended the theater camp program since it began.

"I always have fun at the drama theater," he said.

Aidan is playing "Aidan" in the play and has a lot of lines, he said. His character wants to marry a wealthy landowner's daughter who is asleep like Sleeping Beauty, he said.

In order to wake her, Aidan has to find three feathers from a griffin, which is part eagle and part lion, but he is faced "with complications," he said.

"It's really fun," said assistant Shannon Messersmith, 12, who is participating in her third theater camp.

The program helps teach children to talk in front of people, Shannon said.

"I like helping all the little kids who have stage fright," she said.

Brooke Springer, 13, has never been in a play. Her part is "a stranger," and she has about 14 lines.

Brooke said the camp is fun.

"It's something to do," she said.

The play, which is open to the public, will be performed in the Berkeley Springs High School auditorium Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
