Two Hagerstown Community College students recently were awarded scholarships from the Hispanic Association of Hagerstown.
Carla Gutierrez, formerly of Austin, Texas, and Roselyn Melgar, of Hagerstown, each received a full-time scholarship for the fall semester.
Gutierrez, 20, is a business management major. After graduating from HCC in May 2011, she plans to transfer to the University of Maryland to complete her bachelor's degree. Gutierrez says her dream is to become a corporate accountant for Ernst and Young.
Melgar, 19, is a nursing major who plans to transfer to a four-year institution to complete her registered nursing degree after graduating from HCC in summer 2011. Melgar was awarded the scholarship in the spring and was one of the first HCC students to receive it.
The scholarship is intended to support the Hispanic student body at HCC. Scholarships are offered by semester and funds are raised annually at the Hagerstown Hispanic Festival.
