Roadwork planned for this week

July 04, 2010

Editor's note: Millions of dollars worth of road projects are under way in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and south central Pennsylvania. Drivers will find themselves navigating through detours and delays. The Herald-Mail will run this feature regularly on Mondays this summer and into the fall to get motorists ready for the start of the workweek. Here is what to anticipate on the roads this week.

West Virginia

o A West Virginia Department of Transportation project continues to build a new Tabler Station Road bridge over Interstate 81 and a new roadway from I-81 to U.S. 11. Also expect to encounter construction zones on Opequon Lane.

o Furnace Road in Quincy Township, Pa., will be closed as township crews continue efforts to provide public water service to some residents.

o A bridge deck in Chambersburg borough will be replaced through a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project for Pa. 316/Wayne Avenue. The bridge carries traffic over Norfolk Southern facilities, according to PennDOT.

Deblin Inc. of Mechanicsburg, Pa., will be working on that $1.86 million project until the end of July 2011.

o A portion of Mont Alto Road in Guilford Township, Pa., is closed for a bridge-replacement project. Signs will detour motorists onto U.S. 30 and Pa. 997.

o Antrim Township, Pa., crews will be closing one lane of travel at a time on Angle Road and Talhelm Road. They'll be doing drain tile work there.

Talhelm Road is tentatively scheduled to be closed July 19 for replacement of a box culvert.

o Concrete curb work starts Tuesday on Pa. 16 and Pa. 316 in the Borough of Waynesboro. The curb work marks the start of PennDOT's repair and resurfacing project for a 3.21-mile section of Pa. 16 (Main Street) and a half-mile portion of Pa. 316 (Grant Street).

Motorists might encounter lane restrictions between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. as crews install handicapped-accessible curb ramps and repair sections of the roadway base.

PennDOT said the contractor will probably adjust to a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. paving schedule later in the project.

o Also in the Borough of Waynesboro, workers will be doing utility work on West Main Street between CV Avenue and Grant Street. Lanes of travel might be shifted.

o Roadwork continues on Pepple Road in Washington Township, Pa. Expect delays there.

o Nearby, temporary traffic signals remain in use to guide drivers around a PennDOT project to replace a bridge on Pa. 316 South (Wayne Highway). Motorists approaching the Mason-Dixon Line on that road will be affected.

o The bridge on Pa. 997 in Quincy Township is closed, creating detours on Pa. 16, Pa. 316, Manheim Road, Mentzer Gap Road and Tomstown Road.

o PennDOT has scheduled paving this week for Hollowell Church, Eby and Fannettsburg roads. Pipes will be replaced on Rocky Mountain and Little Cove roads, and a box culvert will be replaced on Fannettsburg Road.

Expect to see shoulder work on Tomstown Road, Waynecastle Road, Pa. 997 in Quincy and Washington townships, and Slabtown Road.
