BlueClaws strike late to top Suns

July 03, 2010

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- There is something about the late innings that isn't sitting well with the Hagerstown Suns.

Anthony Hewitt hit a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning on Friday to lift Lakewood to an 8-7 win over the Suns.

It was the fourth straight game that the outcome was decided in a final-inning rally. The BlueClaws won the first two games of the series in the ninth. The Suns followed suit with a win in the same fashion on Thursday.

This time the Suns faltered in the ninth and 10th.

Hagerstown (3-6, 39-40) tied the game at 6 in the eighth off BlueClaws reliever Luke Wertz. Brett Newsome, Adrian Nieto and Eury Perez hit consecutive one-out singles before Jeff Kobernus walked to score Newsome and give the Suns a 7-6 lead.

But the Suns couldn't close it in the ninth. With one out, Dean Weaver struck out Jonathan Villar but Villar reached first on a wild pitch. He stole second and took third on catcher Nieto's throwing error. Villar scored on Jiwan James' sacrifice fly.

Lakewood got to Suns reliever Luis Garcia in the 10th as Sebastian Valle led off with a double before giving way to pinch runner Adam Buschini. Brian Gump singled and Jeremy Barnes drew and intentionals walk to set up Hewitt's game-winning hit.
