Mail Call

July 03, 2010

"Now that the Republicans have apologized to BP for President Obama's demand that BP pay for the oil disaster, will the Republicans apologize to King George III for the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War? Are they Redcoats or true-blue Americans, like Democrats?"

- Rohrersville

"I'd like to respond to the caller from Smithsburg. I think that the problem with people calling Mr. Obama just 'Obama' is this. If you want respect, you have got to give respect, and Mr. Obama or none of our congressmen or senators are respecting the people of the U.S. anymore. That's why he's just called Obama."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"To the caller from Rohrersville who has asked for the resignation or impeachment of our president, to save our country: Let me use your last line, which is for you. What a disgrace."

- Chambersburg, Pa.

"I'm responding on a piece in the paper from someone from Hagerstown about health care, saying they voted for Obama and their health insurance has gone down considerable, and even got a better policy because of Obama. Well, to this person here, I think you better re-evaluate your saying because your coverage ain't as good as it used to be. My COBRA's $1,100 a month, so why do you think that's so cheap? Insurance, if I go on the policy myself, it's 800 or more."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to thank the recently retired three Hagerstown police officers for a job well done, and I'd also like to welcome them to the dedicated retirees of the city who are 'wise counsel.' ... We need a prescription plan."

- Halfway

"Just wanted to wish Larry King happy retirement once he's finished with his program. He's going to be retiring this fall, so again, I wanted to wish Larry King from CNN and his talk show a happy retirement."

- Hagerstown

"For the caller from Rohrersville: Bush was a disgrace. In his office, looking under the table, around a file cabinet, turned, and laughing and said, now where is those weapons of mass destruction? At that time, 2,883 of our troops, dead. That is a disgrace."

- Clear Spring

"Nice front-page story in this morning's paper: 'Tax bills to be mailed today.' Just what we already know will arrive for us. But can't they just send them and have no publicity, and quit trying to convince us they don't go up? Get real. Happy Fourth of July."

- Clear Spring

"I'm sitting here reading Mail Call, and I read about the caller that talks about Obama being more than a community organizer, that he was graduated No. 1 in his class from Harvard Law. My only question is, if that's the case, how come nobody from Harvard Law remembers it?"

- Hagerstown

"I see that the city really knows how to trim the fat. On a Monday, they announce 5.6 layoffs, then they give a manager a 20 percent raise, and then on the following Friday, they advertise for two questionable job positions."

- Hagerstown

"Could someone please tell me if these people that have mopeds on this road actually have to have a license, and if they don't, how comes they're allowed to drive on the road without driver's license and tags? If they can't have a license, then they shouldn't be on the road."

- Hagerstown

"The regular walking trio at the Veterans Park in Smithsburg would like to thank the Veterans Park angels who have been bringing their own broom and sweeping the mulberries off of our path every day. We greatly appreciate them. We just want to give heads up and a high-five to the people that sweep our path for us."

- Smithsburg

"I'm calling in response to Wednesday's article for someone from Hagerstown saying that they voted for Obama and they're proud of it. Their health insurance has gone down considerably, the price of it, and they even got a better policy because of Obama. ... Everybody else's has gone up."

- Smithsburg

"The head of the Republican Congress, the minority leader, compared the financial crisis we're going through to an ant, and said that financial reform is like using a nuclear weapon on an ant. It was the worst recession since the Great Depression, but obviously Republicans don't see it that way. He also said that if they get back in the majority, they want to raise the retirement age for Social Security to 70 years old. So go ahead, Republicans."

- Sharpsburg

"I'm responding to Smithsburg caller concerned about calling President - just referring to his last name. I just wonder, sir, did you make the same kind of call when President Bush was in office, George W. Bush, when the far left was pounding him merciless? I'm just wondering."

- Kearneysville

"Obama wanted to be president. I don't think he can handle the job, and the only excuse he has is to blame the Republican Party. He wanted it. He can't handle it."

- Williamsport
