Cascade Elementary has new principal



From the new principal's desk:

Meet Karen Palmer, mother of three sons: Christian and Brendon attend college; Sean lives in Utah.

"I have a yellow Lab, Molly. I love to read, garden, spend time with my family and friends and vacation at the beach.

"I graduated from Hood College and have taught at Winter Street, and Pangborn.

"Then I received an administration degree and was assigned to Eastern Elementary and Boonsboro Elementary as the assistant principal.

"I am delighted to come to Cascade education."

Fire Co. carnival under way in town



The Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co. carnival will continue through Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. each night.

Show times are at 7 and 10 p.m.

o Today - Dime Store (pop/variety)

o Thursday - Compromise (pop/rock)

o Friday - Kevin Booth (Elvis tribute); followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

o Saturday - Jam session

Rides are by Pennwood Amusements. Ride all night (every night) for $15 (Thursday night special - $10).

Class of 1965 plans reunion



The Smithsburg High School class of 1965 will hold its 45th reunion Saturday, Aug. 7, at Cascade American Legion.

Ballroom dancing set for Friday



Jim Powers will hold his ballroom dance party Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club on Maugansville Road. Admission costs $4 per person. For more information, call 301-739-9424.

Pen Mar concert series continues Sunday



The Summer Music Series continues at Pen Mar Park on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. as Arrow Trio performs. The concerts are free, but donations are accepted.
