CHEWSVILLE -- Maugansville wasted little time establishing the lead against Valley on Tuesday in the Maryland District 1 Senior Tournament, setting the tone with a 12-run first inning in an 18-3 opening-round rout that was halted after five innings by the 10-run rule.

Maugansville second baseman Ryan Barton paced the team, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

"I was feeding off my team," Barton said. "After the first two guys got hits, it pumped me up."

Barton singled home the first run and Jake Bachtell picked up an RBI on a groundout in Maugansville's huge first inning. With one man on, Dylan Dopson blasted a home run over the fence in left field, giving Maugansville a 4-0 lead.

C.J. Owings and Nathan Murray each added an RBI single before Barton, Bachtell, and Dopson each drove in another run. A fielding error sent home two more Maugansville runners and a wild pitch scored the 12th run of the frame.

"We came out ready to play," said Maugansville coach Dan Dopson. "We've been working hard for two weeks getting ready to play."

Maugansville extended its lead with a six-run second inning that was highlighted by Bachtell's two-run homer.

Murray, Maugansville's starting pitcher, was a menace on the mound. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and worked 3 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and two runs while striking out four.

Valley scored all three runs in the fourth inning. Craig Anderson singled home Andrew Barnhart and Nick Fazenbaker also scored by advancing on the throw. Anderson scored later in the inning.

"Maugansville is a tough team to beat," said Valley coach Moe Price. "They hit the ball in the right place and it just took us an inning or two to get it going."
