Vassie Orville Barnhart, 94, of 20432 Millers Church Road, Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at his home.

Born Dec. 3, 1915, in Leckrone, Pa., he was the son of the late Richard and Lillie May Barnhart.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of St. Peter's (Beard's) Lutheran Church.

He retired from Mack Trucks.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Leora Barnhart; a daughter, Deborah Ann O'Neal of Smithsburg; four sons, David John Barnhart of Hagerstown, Garry Douglas Barnhart of Hagerstown, James Kenneth Barnhart of La Plata, Md., and Eugene Albert Barnhart of Waynesboro, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Michael Barnhart, Nicole Barnhart, Travis Barnhart, Jason O'Neal, Sean O'Neal, Gretchen Shibley, Leslie Shibley and Jaimie Wiles; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Barnhart, Gabriel Barnhart and McKayla Wiles.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Lee Barnhart; one grandson, Erik Barnhart; two sisters; and six brothers.


Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate.

Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Graveside military honors will be provided by Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
