Mail Call

June 29, 2010

"The Funkstown caller, about the sandwich maker coughing, etc.: You could have refused the sandwich and asked for the manager, to tell them why. I once told a sandwich maker to wash his hands before he made my sandwich."

- Hagerstown

"I have a son serving in the U.S. Army, currently in Iraq. He will be coming home in October, and I'm trying to get a credit card to go to see him when he comes home, but I was told that I have a problem with ratio, and what upsets me is foreigners can come into this country and get credit cards, free tax, and everything, but I'm a resident."

- Hagerstown

"There's a house on National Pike that has a flag out front. They need to put their stars on the left side, but now they got them on the right side, which is wrong."

- Hancock

"You can tell it's June, and the hurricane season is here: They just raised the gas prices 8 cents. ... I guess that was the reason for them to do that, or was it because of something else this time?"

"To those people that complain about us handicapped people on electric wheelchairs and scooters crossing at street corners and intersection crossings, and riding along road shoulders that have no sidewalks out on the town's edge, and in the city limits: I'd like to ask why do you think all the sidewalks and curbs are lowered and ramped at the corners to facilitate our ability to travel on sidewalks and crosswalks and get around like everyone else?"

- Hagerstown

"Newspaper columnist Charles Krauthammer made the ridiculous accusation that environmentalists are responsible for the Gulf oil spill. Today little brother Limbaugh inserts Krauthammer's statement in his column and presents it as his own. In the same Herald-Mail issue, a local writer defends Krauthammer's statement. Seems like the far right is practicing the old and proven idea that if the same lie is repeated often enough, then most ignorant people will believe it."

- Washington County

"If you were not at HCC Saturday night, you missed a great production put on by Washington County Show Kids. The director, staff, volunteers, and especially the children are to be commended for a wonderful, entertaining evening. The young people really do enjoy what they're doing, and it shows in the effort they put into their performances. Singing, dancing, twirling - they do it all, and they do it very well."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"This is the third time I've tried to tell readers of The Herald-Mail that Tim Rowland does not use humor in his Sunday editorial pieces. Any time he writes on Sunday, he is doing it straight up, no humor, and doesn't want to be assumed or inferred that he is using humor. And I hope that this time Herald-Mail will publish."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the oil drilling 50 miles out. They want to blame that on everybody, the oil companies, but the Congress and the Senate, Democratic controlled, voted to make them go out 50 miles to drill for oil. So that's the reason why they drilled out that far. They could have gone out 10 miles and they wouldn't have had ... so put the blame where it belongs. Blame it on the Congress and the Senate - dumb thinking."

- Hagerstown

"After reading David Limbaugh's column, I must say that this man is ridiculous. He's actually defending BP, stating that our government is beating up BP, not treating them fairly and not giving BP its due process. Although I am no fan of President Obama and some of his policies, Limbaugh is way off on this one."

- Hagerstown

"In Wednesday's paper there was an excellent article on child-care provisions. I note this because several years ago I reported what I thought was an unsafe - I don't know what to call it - just a woman that was baby-sitting many, many children. Nobody wanted to hear it. I had to eventually call down to Baltimore to talk to someone and report what I knew was going on. Then the local people took action and told this woman about what she could and could not do."

- Hagerstown

"I'm a 50-year-old, and I was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. I just wanted to thank the great outpatient and the physical therapy team from Washington County Hospital, as well as the Lions Club and the fine people over at the Maugansville Ruritan Club, for helping me transition. They've been very, very good to me, and I just wanted to give them big props and to say I appreciate all the help that they've given me and my family."

- Hagerstown

"I don't know about other cities, but Hagerstown is certainly much more lenient than Frederick's historic district guidelines. People here would love to be able to use cheaper lookalike replacement windows, but forget that. ... They refused to let CVS alter the outside of a vacant supermarket because it would alter its historic character. Yes, an historic supermarket, I'm not kidding - and those aren't even the worst examples. Believe me, you could have it a lot worse."

- Frederick, Md.
