Mail Call

June 18, 2010

"We hold these (truths) to be self-evident: School boards, local, state and federal governments are going to continue to overspend. They don't have what it takes to say no. It can be done, as we all know, because we do it in (our) own lives. If we don't have it, we don't spend it. Call, write or e-mail your representative, tell them to stop." - Waynesboro, Pa.

"People keep asking what's wrong with our youth. Well, try this. Our politicians and courts have taken away being able to discipline them by the parents and teachers, etc., plus they've taken away the draft, where these youth could have learned to respect others and get the much-needed discipline." - Hagerstown

"This is in regards to the Blues Fest. I see where they're knocking it. I don't care for it myself, but I didn't hear it this year. I live exactly two blocks from where it's held. I didn't hear a peep out of them. In fact, I was out all day and I made a comment to my next door neighbor, this is the first time in 15 years we haven't been hearing the Blues Fest. And someone calls in and they heard it on Colonial Drive?" - Hagerstown

"I'd like to take this opportunity, for the Maryland Special Olympics, held June 11 to the 13th at Towson University. I would like to congratulate the track and field team for a job well done. They came home with several gold, silver and bronze medals, along with fourth- and fifth-place ribbons. They have a great wife-and-husband coach team. They really held up Saturday in the 95-degree weather. They did absolutely great. Congratulations, track and field, for the best ever job." - Williamsport

"Let's see, who said this: 'A change we can believe in' and 'Yes, we can,' to feeling like 'No I can't' and 'I don't know what ... I've gotten myself into.' You figure this out. I'll give you a hint: It's not George Bush." - Williamsport

"Personally, I think whatever the Israelis do is up to them, and their concern and business. People tend to forget that 30-some years ago, extremist Muslims from the Middle Eastern area - no Israelis, mind you - killed and murdered people after they hijacked airplanes, took hostages. This has been going on for years, and I don't mean just recently. There's always been war and unrest in the Middle East." - Hagerstown

"I see the protesters out at the MVA, right in front of the entrance. I find that to be disturbing and disgusting." - Hagerstown

"Mayor of Williamsport, when you were running for office, you were out there in the community, knocking on doors, talking to people. You seemed to care. Now is not the time to cut our police protection. Keep our two deputies. Allow them to do their job and clean up our beautiful town. Print town ordinances in the town newsletter for those new to our community, and ... pay close attention to the needs of our townspeople. There is very little money, few jobs. We know your job is difficult, but we need less spending." - Williamsport

"To the thieves in Smithsburg: Thanks a lot. For the second time in two weeks, you felt that it was OK to walk into someone's driveway and take what you want. You can really hurt a family that is struggling to make a living, by taking $500 worth of tools off of a work truck. Then a week later, you come by and take something as inconsequential as a pair of oars. The oars can't have meant that much to you, but they brought a lot of pleasure to a 10-year-old boy who loves to fish." - Smithsburg
