Spielman makes W.Va. AA all-state softball team

  • The Clear Spring Blast FCYSL Division 1 U14 team won the end-of-season tournament on Sunday, defeating the YMCA, 7-0. Owen Marx scored twice, Tiago DeSouza, Derek Cermano, Bradly Mills, Steven Glaspell and Jordan Davis each added a goal, Zach Robertson and Mills each had an assist and Corey Ellis made three saves for the shutout. The Blast finished their season 11-0-1. Spielman makes W.Va. all-state

Berkeley Springs senior outfielder Alyssa Spielman was named to the West Virginia Sports Writers Association Class AA all-state second team on Wednesday.


Blue Storm grad Edgin drafted

Francis Marion University senior left-hander Josh Edgin, a Mercersburg Academy graduate, was chosen by the New York Mets in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday. Edgin was a Herald-Mail All-Area First Team honoree in 2006.

Sarah Hurley MemorialVolleyball Tournament

The second annual Sarah Hurley Memorial Volleyball Tournament will be held at the Nitterhouse Soccer Complex in Chambersburg on July 10.

Cost is $100 per team of four players -- which must include two females at all times. Two subs are allowed per team.

All proceeds benefit a college scholarship fund in memory of Hurley, a Chambersburg High School volleyball player killed in an automobile accident in April 2009.

Greencastle Flyers track meets

The Greencastle Flyers will host four summer track meets at Greencastle-Antrim High School on June 17 and 24 and July 8 and 22.

Free registration will begin at 4:45 p.m., with events starting at 5:15. Events include 100-, 200-, 400-, 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, 110-meter hurdles (males) and 100-meter hurdles (females), 4x100 and 4x400 relays, shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, triple jump, softball throw and frisbee throw. Throwers should bring their own implements if possible.
