June 09, 2010

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The bridge that carries McKinley Street over Interstate 81 between Chambersburg Borough and Guilford Township in Franklin County will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, June 14, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said in a news release.

The bridge closure is necessary for a construction project to replace the bridge deck and parapets, the release said.

The McKinley Street Bridge was built in 1963 and carries nearly 6,100 vehicles a day, according to PennDOT.

The work is scheduled to be completed and the bridge reopened to traffic by Aug. 29. In the meantime, motorists will be detoured around the bridge closure by way of Willow Street, Falling Spring Road, U.S. 30 and Stouffer Avenue.

The construction work on the McKinley Street Bridge is part of an overall contract to rehabilitate six bridges on the I-81 mainline and nine overhead bridges along the I-81 corridor between Chambersburg and Greencastle, Pa., the release said.

PennDOT has contracted with HRI, Inc. of State College, Pa., to conduct the repairs at a cost of $19.6 million. The overall project started in April 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2011, according to the release.
