SHARPSBURG - Donald Dean "Cy" Kretzer, 88, of 104 W. Antietam St., Sharpsburg, Md., died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at his home.

Born July 25, 1921, in Keedysville, Md., he was the son of the late David Franklin and Carrie Mae Dean Kretzer.

He was a 1938 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He was the owner/operator of Kretzer's Market, Sharpsburg, for 43 years, until his retirement. He also was a contractor school bus driver for the southern part of Washington County.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg. He sang in the choir. In his earlier years, he belonged to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Keedysville.


He was a member of Sharpsburg Lions Club, Antietam Post 235 American Legion, Sharpsburg; member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Grand Lodge AF&AM of Maryland, first president of Sharpsburg Little League and served on the board of directors, Sharpsburg Bank.

He was past president of Hagerstown Municipal Band, past member of the Rohrersville Band and past president of the Sharpsburg Bluebirds baseball team.

Survivors include wife, Ann Kathryn "Missy" Highberger Kretzer, married Oct. 18, 1942, of Sharpsburg; daughter, Becky Weaver and her husband, Russ, of Sharpsburg; son, Mike Kretzer and his wife, Barbara, of Sharpsburg; son, Mark Kretzer of Sharpsburg; grandchildren, Matthew Weaver and his wife, Allison, Cara Weaver Burker, Ryan Kretzer and his wife, Cristine, Josh Kretzer and his wife, Jes, and Katy Toy and her husband, Eric; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Rosalie Gross; and one brother, Harold Kretzer.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard G. Hembrock and the Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Immediately following services, the family will receive friends at Burnside First Church of God, 3904 Mills Road, Sharpsburg.
