Mail Call

June 07, 2010

"Remember the TV classroom instruction Washington County had many years ago? I remember it as being considered a highly modern and efficient system. Why can't schools be used 12 months a year? Are these money and real estate tax savings ideas? You bet they are. School systems are about as inefficient as they can get and nobody seems to want to change them - a monster business."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"I made the original comment about the Palin speaking fees. To answer the comment in Wednesday's paper about how much Obama spent, I agree completely that it was absurd. I could fill a whole newspaper page about big money being spent on election campaigns and large payments going to other high-profile speakers. It's all about the rich doing it their way."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I'm reading the Mail Call on Wednesday, June 2. I see a lot of Republicans calling in criticizing Obama for the oil spill. These are the same people that don't want government in their lives or regulation, but they expect the government to jump in on this right away, and wonder why it isn't done. They also take up for George Bush, who left this country in debt, with two unfinished wars, a big deficit, bank failures and the illegal immigrant problem."

"Last evening, Tuesday, June 1, my wife received a ticket from a county sheriff's officer, on Robinwood Drive on her way home. Her offense? Driving without a seat belt. I would like to thank the officer for helping to ensure she gets home safely. She should have known better. Keep up the good work."

- Hagerstown

"Hagerstown caller, how dare you demand we who criticize Obama's handling of the oil spill go clean it up? We didn't cause it, so why should we be compelled to clean it up? ... We have jobs, families to care for and responsibilities. Are you or BP going to take over for us if we run off to the Gulf to wash seagulls? Your ... attempt to deflect attention from the Obama administration's utter failure at handling this crisis is especially ludicrous after all the grandiose claims made by you, his supporters, about his intelligence and leadership skills."

- Frederick, Md.

"I'm sick and tired of hearing the police officers getting praise for their duties, such as catching someone on a moped. That is ridiculous. I'm a registered nurse in the state of Maryland and we are being pounded. We are being crushed. We never get praise. We never get thanks. Think about it."

- Hagerstown

"I have two comments today. My first one is, where do you find bears that carry swords? I'd love to see one. And also, people calling about these pants and hats looking stupid on kids - what about the way women dress nowadays? Women used to dress very nicely back through the '50s, '60s, '70s and so on, but nowadays some of the outfits ... if that's all I had to wear, I wouldn't leave the house. It's just ridiculous."

- Hagerstown

"There's a couple more Mail Calls saying Obama wasn't down in Louisiana, the first time he was down there. That is not true, that is a bold-faced lie, because watching Glenn Beck. He was down there in the very beginning of this. He's been on top of it, but there's nothing much he can do. It's up to BP to stop the oil leak. What do you want, Obama to put on scuba gear and go down and plug it himself? He's doing what he can. ... so all you Obama haters ought to just grow up."

- Hagerstown

"I wish the Washington County Sheriff's (Department) would monitor the crossover on the Dual Highway at Cornell Avenue. I'm tired of having the right of way to make a right turn onto Cornell and being cut off by these people going through this crossover at high speeds, and just cutting you off."

- Hagerstown

"It is once again with interest I read in the paper all this publicity, even on the TV, about this ever-famous Blues Fest. But where in the world is all the free publicity and TV information about the Boonsboro carnival, that benefits Washington County and its people that live in it? And they also have a great carnival. Now, come on, people, give them some free publicity."

- Clear Spring

"Be considerate of your neighbor: Mow your lawn."

- Sharpsburg

"In baseball, why does the manager keep the starters in until the end of the game when the score is 23 to nothing?"

- Hagerstown

"This is a comment for the correctional officer from Hagerstown. Instead of crying about pay raises, you ought to be glad that you have a steady job and don't have to worry about a layoff. The senior citizens aren't getting raises either, and they're making a lot less money than you do."

- Hagerstown

"This is on perfect baseball game. I'm watching Detroit and Cleveland last night, and the pitcher for Detroit, I don't know how his name is, Armando Galarraga of Detroit, he lost a bid for a perfect game on an umpire's bad call. I watched TV, I watched reruns. This guy was out. Cleveland here was out by at least a foot. Ought to review this and give the pitcher for Detroit a perfect game. They ought to overturn the umpire's decision on that call."

- Hagerstown
