Frank Hammond Warfield, 85, of 64 Sunbrook Lane, Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Tuesday, March 24, 1925, in Florence, Md., he was the son of the late Thurmon Russell Warfield and the late Mabel Carr Warfield.

He graduated from Lisbon High School in Lisbon, Md., in 1942. After high school, he entered into the service and took training at the George Peabody College, and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, where he was an aviation cadet. Upon his return from the war, he attended and graduated from the University of Maryland, where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1949.

Frank taught agriculture and science at Smithsburg High School. He was employed at Fairchild Aircraft as a weights engineer, where he was involved in the Osprey and Goose aviation projects. He was later employed with the State of Maryland as a supervisor in the Division of Milk Control and retired after many years of service.


He was a former member of the Welty Church of the Brethren and was currently a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was involved in the Men's United Methodist Breakfast Club. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, Audubon Society in Maryland and Florida, BPO Elks 378 and Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

Frank enjoyed birding, photography, woodworking and gardening.

Frank and his wife, Doris, spent 22 wonderful winters in Dunedin, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Clopper Warfield; one son, Paul N. Warfield of Boonsboro, Md.; two sisters, Miriam Reed and Rosemarie Glenn, both of Florence in Howard County; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Jordan, Guinevere Warfield and Virginia Warfield; and brothers, Thurmon R. Warfield II and William Carr Warfield.

Services will be Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Richard H. Jewell and the Rev. Patrick Ricker officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 9.

Private interment will be at Welty Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Smithsburg.
