Heavy winds don't do much damage

June 06, 2010

Heavy winds early Sunday afternoon and evening didn't do a lot of damage around the Tri-State area, emergency dispatchers from Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia said.

The only damage that was reported was a tree that fell on a Verizon wire at about 5 p.m. off Wolfsville Road., a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

A tornado watch was in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday for the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, as well as central and Western Maryland, with the exception of Garrett County, according to the National Weather Service.

Carl Erickson, an Accuweather meteorologist, said a tornado was not spotted in the Tri-State area, but tornado-like activity was detected on Doppler Radar.

He said Sunday's unstable air masses, coupled with warm and moist conditions, were conducive to tornado activity.
