MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Organizers estimate more than 200 people on about 20 teams participated in the Mercersburg Relay for Life fundraiser held Friday night and Saturday at James Buchanan High School.

"We think we doubled (participation) from last year," relay adviser Chris Ardinger said.

Proceeds had not been tallied Saturday afternoon, but Ardinger said he was confident the event met its goal of raising $10,000.

The event was a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The Mercersburg Relay for Life was started last year by Ardinger, then a high school senior, and another student, he said. Last year, it raised about $8,500, he said.

This year's student chairs were Katy Ortbal and Chris McNeal, Ardinger said.

New this year were a memorial bike ride and pancake breakfast Saturday morning in memory of Tuscarora School District physical education teacher Jim Houck, who died of cancer, Ardinger said.

"He was really an inspiration to a lot of the students here," he said.

The event also included a luminaria service with about 300 luminiarias in memory of cancer victims or in honor of survivors, he said.
