Smithsburg traffic signal contract awarded

The Washington County Commissioners voted Tuesday to award a $365,113 contract to Huntzberry Brothers Inc. of Smithsburg for a traffic signal and other improvements at the entrances to Smithsburg's schools.

The project includes the installation of new traffic signals and associated equipment, grading and drainage improvements, construction of concrete curbs and sidewalks, paving and pavement markings along North Main Street in Smithsburg, in the vicinity of the existing school entrances.

Huntzberry Brothers Inc. was the lowest of six bidders for the project, according to a report from Robert Slocum, the county's deputy director of public works.

The Washington County Board of Education will contribute up to $300,000 for the project and the town of Smithsburg will contribute up to $30,056, according to Slocum's report.
