Cancer Survivors Day celebration

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- National Cancer Survivors Day is Sunday, June 6. Summit Cancer and Hematology Services will hold a Cancer Survivors Day celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. at the King Street United Brethren Church, 162 E. King St., Chambersburg, for all cancer survivors and their families.

Free parenting classes

"Becoming a Love and Logic Parent" is a three-week course, offered by Washington County Hospital and Potomac Case Management Services that provides simple and practical techniques to help parents have less stress and more fun while raising responsible kids.

This course is for parents with children 5 to 18 years of age who want to communicate better with a child, argue less, set enforceable limits, turn problem behaviors into learning opportunities and teach children how to solve their own problems.

This free program will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, June 21 and 28, and July 12. All classes are held at Robinwood Medical Center, Suite 142, east of Hagerstown.

Summer play camps

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Commission will hold three summer play camps again this year at Morgan's Grove Park, Sam Michael's Park and Wright Denny Elementary School.

These camps are for children ages 5 to 12. Each site is supervised by trained staff and offers a variety of recreational activities, swimming, trips and special events.

Registration is required before children can attend camp. Camp space is limited and might fill up quickly. Camp space is not held without payment and cannot be guaranteed for participants who pay weekly.

Camp is held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Children will need to bring a packed lunch, snack and water bottle to camp each day. Camp ends promptly at 4 p.m. There is no before or after care available. Additional fees will be collected for field trips and special events. Each child is required to purchase a T-shirt, that will be worn on field trip days, for an additional $10. No refunds will be given after initial registration or if child is suspended from camp for any reason. The fee is $80 per week. Register at Jefferson County Parks and Recreation or online at

College for kids at HCC

Hagerstown Community College's College for Kids program begins June 21.

HCC's College for Kids offers more than 70 courses, such as science, computers, music, art, fashion and travel. Classes are taught by qualified teachers in a small-class setting with an emphasis on hands-on, interactive learning experiences for first- through 10th-graders.

Classes will continue through the week of Aug. 6. Students meet from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Course costs vary according to section and materials needed.

Young detectives camps

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department will hold CSI Young Detectives Camps from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, June 21, through Friday, June 25, and Monday, Aug. 16, through Friday, Aug. 20, at Sam Michael's Park, 235 Sam Michael's Lane, Shenandoah Junction.

CSI is an in-depth engaging and educational experience that combines mystery and investigation. Learn how real police officers investigate crimes. Solve crimes and mysteries. Kids may learn to fingerprint, cast and do what real investigators do. Cost of the camp is $85 and is for kids ages 7 to 13. Register at Jefferson County Parks and Recreation or online at

Theater classes for children

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Full Circle Theater Company offers the following theater classes for kids.

o Creative Drama Camp for ages 6 through 9, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 26, through Friday, July 30. $125.
