Williamsport High graduate recognized for perfect attendance

Kalyn Berry never participated in any skip days and she always made sure her doctor's appointments were after school.

It was that mind-set that allowed the 18-year-old to record perfect attendance throughout her school years.

"Including kindergarten," her mother Kate Berry proudly said Thursday.

Kalyn, a Williamsport High School senior who graduated Thursday night at Hagerstown Community College, said she received a certificate from the school system this week honoring her perfect attendance.

Kalyn was one of three siblings who were on track to have perfect attendance throughout their school years, Kate Berry said.

But daughter Kristin was not able to attain perfect attendance because of a broken jaw and daughter Lauren's streak was broken when she came down with chicken pox, Kate Berry said.

Kalyn's family members attribute her perfect attendance in part to animals.

Kate Berry said Kalyn had a variety of pets --including dogs, lizards and hamsters --while she was growing up and she figures exposure to the animals helped boost her immune system.

Kalyn said going to class everyday was natural to her.

"I guess I always just thought that school was expected," Kalyn said.

Kalyn plans to attend Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., where she hopes to study veterinary science.
