MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Two Berkeley County elementary school students have died since last Friday, Berkeley County Schools spokesperson Jaimee Borger said Thursday.

A third-grade student at Opequon Elementary School died Tuesday, and a kindergarten student who was enrolled at, but not attending, Berkeley Heights Elementary School, died May 28, Borger said.

The school district's crisis team visited Opequon Elementary on Wednesday to provide grief counseling for students and staff members.

"There is no relationship between the cause of the child's death and Opequon Elementary School," Borger said in a statement. "A letter went home with each student on Wednesday explaining that a death occurred, enabling parents to be prepared if their student posed questions or concerns."

The kindergarten student enrolled at Berkeley Heights was receiving home instruction, Borger said.
