Suns stay timely to rip 'Claws

HAGERSTOWN -- The Hagerstown Suns are creatures of habit.

They don't hit the ball far, but they do hit it fair when it is needed the most.

Jeff Kobernus hit a two-run single to cap a four-run second inning and Justin Bloxom had two hits and two RBIs, including a run-scoring triple in the second, on Thursday to lead the Suns to a 7-2 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws.

The Suns (29-26) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and then settled in behind the pitching of Mitchell Clegg (7-0) and three relievers. Clegg threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out one.

Even though the Suns had a comfortable lead, the ninth inning proved to be tense. Shane Erb came on and allowed an unearned run before leaving with two outs and the bases loaded. Rob Wort finished the game by striking out Jeremy Barnes to earn his third save.

Hagerstown got to starter Colby Shreve in the second as Bloxom led off with a single. The Suns broke through with J.R. Higley's two-out double to get the Suns on the scoreboard. Adrian Nieto followed with an RBI single and Eury Perez doubled to set up Kobernus' single.

Steven Souza started the rally in the third with a single before scoring on Bloxom's triple. Bloxom gave the Suns a 6-0 when he scored on Destin Hood's sacrifice fly.

The Suns scored their final run in the fifth when Francisco Soriano led off with a triple and scored on Bloxom's one-out grounder to second.

The BlueClaws (31-24) scored single runs in the sixth and the ninth innings.
