HARRISBURG, Pa. - Rudolph "Rudy" B. Keyes, 87, Harrisburg, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Holy Spirit Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1923, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late William and Mary Ellen (Whalen) Keyes, and was also preceded in death by his 10 brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of the immediate Keyes family.

He was a retired racehorse owner and trainer, and trained for many stables along the Northeast coast, including the former Thorncliffe Farms. An avid sports fan, he played semipro basketball when he was younger, and played briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters farm team and the Hagerstown Tigers.

He was a member of Derry Street United Methodist Church for 24 years, where he had been head usher, was a member of the Derry Street Senior Citizens group, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 31 years, Carolyn D. (Miller) Keyes; one stepson, David E. Davis Jr., Turtle Creek, Pa.; two stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; his nephews, Reginald, Russell "Baby Brother" and Vincent "Binkle" Keyes; many other loving nieces and nephews; and friends.

A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market St., Harrisburg, with Pastor Kevin St. Martin officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
