June 03, 2010

HOUSTON (AP) -- Carlos Lee hit a two-run home run, Wandy Rodriguez snapped his three-game losing streak and the Houston Astros beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Wednesday night.

Rodriguez (3-7) pitched out of bases loaded jams in the fourth and fifth innings to secure his first victory since May 12. He struck out a season high eight over five innings.

Lee hit his sixth homer of the season off John Lannan (2-3) in the third inning. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs in 6 1-3 innings.

Houston got another run in the sixth on a rare double error by rookie shortstop Ian Desmond and Hunter Pence had a two-run triple off Tyler Walker.

Desmond took his foot off second that allowed Pedro Feliz to be safe on a grounder by Tommy Manzella. Desmond then threw wide to first base allowing Pence to score and Feliz to take third base.

Desmond committed his third error in the seventh, giving him a league-leading 14 errors for the season.

Rodriguez got off to a shaky start. Nyjer Morgan singled and stole second to start the game and went to third on a wild pitch. Adam Dunn doubled Morgan home and Ryan Zimmerman walked.

Rodriguez then retired nine in a row before he hit Josh Willingham with a pitch, Desmond doubled and Mike Morse walked to load the bases with one out in the fourth. Rodriguez regained control and struck out Wil Nieves and Lannan to protect Houston's 2-1 lead.

Rodriguez got out of another bases loaded jam in the fifth. With two out, he struck out Willingham on a full count but home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman ruled catcher's interference on Humberto Quintero and awarded Willingham first base.

Desmond then grounded out to end the inning.
