Sign to designate visitor parking in Funkstown

June 02, 2010

FUNKSTOWN - Funkstown officials expect to put up a sign in the parking lot behind the doughboy statue that identifies some of those spaces as being for town visitors, Town Clerk/Treasurer Brenda L. Haynes said Wednesday.

The area where the parking lot is now once was a cut-through for drivers heading from East Baltimore Street to southbound Frederick Road. Several years ago, the Maryland State Highway Administration installed a curb, so drivers no longer could cut through that area and have since had to turn right at the traffic light, Haynes said.

The resulting parking lot has about six parking spaces, some of which belong to a neighboring business and some of which the town has the rights to use through an easement, Haynes said.

A sign on the NeXgen Hobby shop states parking is for customers only and other vehicles will be towed at owners' expense.

Haynes said some people complained about the issue, so at a May 25 special meeting at Town Hall, town officials discussed putting up a sign noting which spaces are for Funkstown visitors.
