Mary Jane O'Brian, 78

Mary Jane O'Brian, 78, of 20711 Breezewood Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, May 31, 2010, at her home.

Born Dec. 24, 1931, in Sellersville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harold Franklin Fetherman and the late Beatrice Vogel Fetherman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. O'Brian Jr., in 1998; her nephew, William L. O'Brian Jr. in 2005; and her niece, Malia Johnson Premer in 2006.

She graduated in 1953 from Millersville State Teachers College (now University) and from Shippensburg University in 1976, where she received her master's degree in early childhood education.

Mary started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Hilltown Township, Pa., and taught in various locations until she moved to Hagerstown, where she was the teacher/director at St. John's Episcopal Church Nursery School for many years. Later, she was an instructor at Hagerstown Junior College and also a Head Start teacher for Washington County schools. She retired from the State of Maryland Child Care Administration Agency, where she had been a child development specialist.

Mary was an active member and former treasurer of the American Association of University Women, where she served on the Scholarship and Book Sale Committees. She was also active in and a former treasurer of the Singer Society at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ.

Mary was an avid reader and bridge player. She did extensive genealogy research, was a member of the Pennsylvania German Society for more than 40 years, and was a dedicated student of the Pre-Revolutionary historical period.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol O. Stoeber and her husband Craig of Gaithersburg, Md.; and son, David E. O'Brian of Berwyn, Pa.; one sister, Linda Fetherman Johnson of Windsor, Colo.; five grandchildren, Christopher O'Brian, Philip Stoeber, Abigail O'Brian, John Stoeber and Eva O'Brian; one niece, Mary Lou O'Brian; and two nephews, Matthew Johnson and Robert O'Brian. Mary was beloved by family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Services will be Friday, June 4, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Gerald C. Hanberry officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 4.

Interment will follow at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler, Pa., on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 11 a.m.
