Dance party to be held Friday



Jim Powers will hold his dance party Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club on Maugans Avenue. Admission costs $4 per person.

Local author to visit Smithsburg Library



Local author Linda Heinrich will be at the Smithsburg Library on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to discuss her recently published book, "Jason's Helmet: The True Story of a Helmet's Journey Home from the Battlefield." Friends of the Library



The Friends group of Washington County Free Library is offering two free classes this summer at the Smithsburg Library. The classes are for students entering grades three to six. French will be taught from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from June 28 to July 2. Japanese culture will be taught from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. from July 19 to 23.

Workshop planned



Led by certified genealogist Marsha L. Fuller, the Smithsburg Library will host a workshop Thursday, June 10, at 7 p.m. that will explore ways to turn seemingly unimportant items, such as old wrapping paper and bills, into important ways to gain more knowledge of your ancestors.

The event will take place in the community room. Seating is limited. To register, call 301-824-7722.

Homemakers Club



The Brightwood Homemakers Club will meet Tuesday, June 8, at 11:30 a.m. at Black Eyed Susan Restaurant for a luncheon followed by a brief business meeting.

Lunch will be from the menu.

College for Kids offered by HCC



This summer, Hagerstown Community College's Continuing Education and Community Services Division will once again offer its annual College for Kids summer enrichment program.

Classes are taught in a small-class setting with an emphasis on hands-on, interactive learning experiences geared toward children going into grades one through 10.

Classes are available that feature everything from science, computers, music and theater to history, art, fashion and travel, with new programs being added each year.

Classes start June 21 and continue through the week of Aug. 6. Students meet Monday through Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Individual course costs vary according to section and materials needed.
