Mail Call

"I'm sitting here and I happened to turn on the Jerry Springer show, and these people are fighting for a half an hour, slapping each other around. In the state of Maryland, the state takes care of assaults if you don't want to pursue the charge. Where is Springer's show planned at? Should be charged for conspiracy, and so should the people on there."

"May 25, 2010, around 8-ish, my daughter and I were taking a walk around our neighborhood when we saw a tubular white object flying in the sky, leaving a stream behind it like a jet. But much to both of our surprise it did not have wings like an aircraft. It did have a bright ball of light behind it as it flew through the sky. As we stopped to watch it, it went from a gradual upward course to a complete downward 'toward us' course. As it fell closer to earth it completely turned into a ball of light, then disappeared. We then saw another that did the same thing. ... The only thing I can guess is maybe meteors?"

"I realize the oil spill in the Gulf is horrific, but I think people should keep an eye to North and South Korea. Things there are getting gradually worse, and it could be much worse than the oil in the Gulf."

- Sharpsburg

"I would like to know if the columnists in your paper don't have any other stuff to talk about except the president, and condemning the president. Every day it's the same thing, condemning the president. Don't they realize that's why the president is in that Oval Office and they're out here on the street writing columns? Maybe they should stop and think about that. ... He was intelligent enough to get in there - something that they can't achieve. So they better stop and think about that."

- Hagerstown

"May 27, A5, bottom left-hand corner, 'Can you believe it?'. Thanks, Herald-Mail, for reporting this. I really feel secure about our air traffic system, our FAA and our airports. Woman left on a plane from ... midnight to 4 a.m. before the cleaning crew woke her to get her off the plane. Another example of failure of the traffic safety or the airport authorities, and our Homeland Security."

- Leitersburg

"The caller concerned about stupidity of wearing a baseball hat backwards gave me quite a chuckle this morning. I wonder what that caller's priorities are. I think that's a little goofy - but then, I'm goofy also."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"When is this craziness ever going to stop? OK, when Obama came into power, granted, Bush had left a deficit, a big deficit. But this man, in a very short period of time, has just - I mean, it's crazy the way he has spent money and got us trillions and trillions of dollars into more debt. Unbelievable, unprecedented ... That's all you do, no matter what it is, you blame the Bush administration. Stand up, be a man, and quit it."

- Hagerstown

"You see all these kids walking around with their hats on backward, the pants and/or shorts down around past their rear end and their shoes untied, flopping on their feet. But after looking at them I realize why that's done. Most of them haven't mastered the task yet of how to properly wear a hat, tighten a belt or tie their shoes."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to Clear Spring, in the May 25 newspaper, Thursday, about the gas stations. Well, the gas station owners don't set the price of the gas. It's the distributors. Your small business owners normally only get 2 to 3 cents per gallon on top of what they pay for their gas. They need to do their reference and homework."

- Hagerstown

"I might kill a bear if she was coming after me with a sword - or at least I would run pretty fast."

- Cavetown

"This is an issue I have concerning people who try to beat the system by not - by doing construction work and things, putting in things and never getting a permit. They think they're beating the system. They think they're beating the government. A lot of them - like several I know are supposedly Christians, even one a preacher, but they think that because nobody's watching them they don't have to get a permit."

- Hagerstown

"Well, the president has finally, in an attempt to appear tough on border security, started to send a token force of 1,200 National Guardsmen to the southern border. Wow. How token is it? Well, if we assume that everybody works 12-hour shifts, seven days a week, that's only 600 men ... And then we have the issue of command and control, etc., etc. So how many troops are we really sending? A real token force."

- Smithsburg

"I heard on our TV news that Frederick said they do not want any more sprawling developments using farmland, but the town should look to put homes downtown. It is wrong to put any more housing developments out near Robinwood. The tax revenue they bring in is eaten up quickly, by adding more roads. Eastern Boulevard can't handle more directed at them either."

- Williamsport

"World Cup Soccer is almost here. Ooh, I'm so excited - not. Soccer is track with a ball. Soccer is not a sport. Soccer is not a popular sport in America, nor will it ever be."

- Hagerstown

"I read the comment in the paper that says that somebody made a comment that wearing a ball hat backwards looks stupid. I just wanted to let you know I read that to my 4-year-old granddaughter, who is on a ball team in Sharpsburg, and she said 'What? I think that looks cool.'"
