Under the direction of Michelle Hull and Betty Sue Kitchen, the E. Russell Hicks Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade concert bands participated in the Maryland State Concert Band Festival recently at Lindale Middle School in Anne Arundel County, Md.

Both bands were eligible to compete in the festival after receiving "superior" ratings at the March 29 Washington County Concert Band Festival.

As the only middle school bands representing Washington County at the state festival (Smithsburg Middle School was eligible, but was unable to attend), E. Russell Hicks received excellent marks as the bands performed in front of four judges and other eligible bands participating in the event.

The seventh-grade band played "Tall Cedars March" as its warm-up piece, followed by "Flurry for Winds and Percussion" and "Chester Variations," which were scored by the judges.

The eighth-grade band played "Castlewood March" as its warm-up, followed by "Peer Gynt Suite No. 2" and "Chesford Portrait" for judging.

Both of the band directors said they were pleased the bands had the opportunity to participate in this year's festival, and were very proud of their musicians' achievements.
