BALTIMORE -- South Hagerstown senior La'Kesa McClain won the Class 3A girls discus Friday at the Maryland State Track & Field Championships at Morgan State University.

McClain's winning mark of 116 feet, 10 inches came on her second of six throws. Reservoir's Sam Clay was the runner-up at 113-10.

McClain placed third at states with a throw of 105-8 last year, when the Rebels competed in Class 2A.

"She's worked real hard," South coach Dwayne Freeman said. "Last year she was disappointed with the outcome of the state meet, and that gave her the motivation to come out and win it."

McClain set school records in the discus (125-11) and shot put (38-6) at last week's 3A West region meet. She's seeded third for today's shot put, an event she also placed third in last year at states.

"She's looking forward to doing well in the shot put also," Freeman said.

Also for the South girls Friday, Jaid Sandeen placed third in the pole vault at 9-6.

The South boys placed in two events. Dylan Burkett was fifth in the shot put (47-0 3/4) and Chip Rittenhouse, Xavier Richardson, Seth Ofosu-Ameyaw and Jordan Alston finished seventh in the 4x200-meter relay in a school-record time of 1:31.09.

"We're in an extremely tough class, and we came out of an extremely tough region," Freeman said. "I'm just happy we were able to qualify some kids for states and come down here and have some respectable performances."
