Ask the experts: How can I keep cool?

May 29, 2010

Q. As a senior, why am I more susceptible to the heat?

A. Dr. Tania Crussiah, a family physician with Williamsport Family Practice, said it simply has to do with getting older.

"Aging decreases the body's ability to regulate the body's temperature, especially under heat conditions," she wrote in an e-mail.

Also, she said medications such as diuretics/water pills,"can have side effects that effect our fluid status, thirst, etc."

Q What are three things I can do this summer to make sure I protect myself from the heat?

Crussiah recommended drinking plenty of water; wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and limit outdoor activities, especially from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
