May 29, 2010

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Two people were killed when an SUV overturned in a creek early Saturday morning on Giles Mill Road in Berkeley County, according to a press release from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

Carins L. Beattie, 40, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and John Zimmerman Jr., 43, of Alexandria, Va., were killed when the Lexus sport-utility vehicle in which they were riding overturned and submerged into Mill Creek near the bridge on Giles Mill Road, deputies said.

A third occupant of the vehicle, Carlo Figarella, 31, of Stafford, Va., was able to swim to safety, the release said.

When deputies arrived on the scene, Figarella told them that two other men were still in the vehicle, according to deputies. The bodies of Beattie and Zimmerman were found when the Lexus was pulled from the water.

An investigation determined that the driver, who was not identified by the sheriff's office, lost control of the vehicle and ran off the left side of the roadway before rolling into the creek.

A Berkeley County Emergency Services dispatcher said the accident happened at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Department and Berkeley County EMS also responded, according to police.
