Southern Fulton shut out in district tourney opener

Pitcock gains All-American honors

ROLLA, Mo. -- Shepherd University pitcher/first baseman Nichole Pitcock was named as an honorable mention to the 2010 Daktronics, Inc. All-America softball team, becoming the first Rams softball player in program history to receive such honors.

Pitcock led Shepherd with a .348 batting average and 35 RBIs and placed second on the team with five home runs and 32 runs scored for a Rams team which set single-season records in total wins (36) and conference wins (18). She also recorded a 15-7 pitching record with a 1.76 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 131 innings.

Brashears is All-American

St. Maria Goretti graduate Kevin Brashears was named to the NCAA Division III All-American team by D3baseball.com.

An outfielder for Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., Brashears led the team with a .429 average and a school-record 87 hits.

Brashears, a junior, adds his first All-America accolade to a career in which he has been named as the 2009 Salisbury Regional Most Outstanding Player and the 2010 USA South Conference Tournament MVP. Brashears was also named first team All-South Region and to the Gold Glove team by the ABCA this spring.

Shenandoah, ranked ninth by D3baseball.com, opens up the NCAA Division III playoffs on Friday night against Illinois Wesleyan.

Local grads earn NEC honors

SOMERSET, N.J. -- North Hagerstown grad Kent Worthington and Waynesboro grad Andrew Caron, both of the Mount St. Mary's baseball team, have each been named to the 2010 Northeast Conference All-Conference second team.

Worthington, a senior pitcher, finished with a 4-2 record, a 2.95 ERA -- second in the NEC -- and struck out 72 in 76 1/3 innings. Caron, a junior designated hitter, batted .305 with a team-high .547 slugging percentage.

Funkstown-Williamsport suspended

The season-opening game between Funkstown Post 211 and the Williamsport Nationals was suspended in the top of the seventh inning due to darkness with home team Williamsport leading, 16-14.

The teams meet again on Tuesday at Funkstown.
