New Hancock visitors center to open Friday

May 27, 2010

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park will open a new Hancock visitors center Friday along the towpath by Lock 52.

The visitors center in the historic Bowles House will hopefully attract more towpath users because of its location along the trail, park officials said.

The Bowles House is a historic farmhouse dating to the 1780s. This past winter, park officials rehabilitated the house to prepare it for its new use as a visitors center, according to a news release.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be today at 2 p.m. at the house at 439 E. Main St.
