Hagerstown police continue search for young bear

May 27, 2010

HAGERSTOWN -- The Hagerstown Police Department will continue searching Thursday for a young black bear that was spotted in the city's North End on Wednesday, Police Chief Arthur Smith said.

Authorities said the animal was seen Wednesday near North Hagerstown High School and The Potomac Center off Marshall Street. Officials from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland State Police, the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Hagerstown Police Department monitored those areas for much of the day to ensure the bear didn't get too close to humans.

Harry Spiker, a bear biologist with the Department of Natural Resources, said he believed the bear was a 75- to 140-pound yearling that was passing through nearby woods.

He said residents should stay away from the bear if they see it.
