The Humane Society of Washington County recently received a generous donation of pet-related items from Junior Girl Scouts Troop 40795, including handmade pet toys.

On May 13, troop member Elaina presented the donations to the shelter on behalf of her fellow scouts.

Troop members who participated in the project included Amanda, Anna, Ashley, Emma, Hannah B., Hannah T., Holly, Kayla, Jenna, Lillyanna, Lynn, Marissa and Quinn.

The girls decided to collect items for the shelter to earn their Bronze Award, which is the highest award that Junior Girl Scouts can receive. It demonstrates that the girls made a promise to help others, improve their community and strive to develop better character qualities.

"We had to vote on who we wanted to help and we all really love animals, so the Humane Society won," Elaina said.

Troop members researched and planned their service project. The girls promoted their project at Girl Scouts meetings and online. They then collected items at a countywide Girl Scouts event. After collecting, they sorted and loaded the items to deliver to the shelter. They also spent various meetings making cat and dog toys for the pets at the shelter.

"We really appreciate this generous donation and the time the girls spent making the pet toys," said Paul Miller, the shelter's executive director. "We have so many kittens and puppies that will really enjoy the toys."

The Humane Society is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. Call 301-733-2060 or go to for information about animal-related issues, directions to the shelter and information about programs and services.
