MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Ralph C. Keiffer, 92, of Mercersburg, passed away Monday, May 24, 2010, at ManorCare, Chambersburg, Pa., following a long-fought battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 10, 1917, in Montgomery Township, Pa., he was the oldest son of the late David and Ruth Conner Keefer.

He proudly served in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was a lifelong dairy farmer, and during most of those years also worked at Letterkenny Army Ordnance Depot. He was a man of enormous energy, grit and determination. He enjoyed hunting and fishing trips in the American West and Canada. He nearly completed his lifelong goal of visiting all 50 states, missing only Rhode Island and Hawaii. He especially enjoyed visits with family and friends.

Ralph and his late wife, Mildred Grove Keiffer, were married for more than 67 years and together raised four children. Surviving are his son, Philip, and wife, Carol, of Newark, Del.; daughter, Donna Yaros, and husband, Peter, of Chambersburg; and his beloved son, Jared. Also surviving are his granddaughter, Elizabeth, and husband, David; his grandson, Scott, and wife, Annette; and one great-grandson, Nicholas, all of Newark, Del. Also surviving him are granddaughter, Michaelelle Keiffer of Kensington, Md.; two brothers, John E. Keefer and David M. Keefer, both of Mercersburg; many nieces and nephews; and his faithful companions, Corky and Blue.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald L.; his first wife, Jessie Anna Miller Keiffer; and an infant daughter.

The family expresses heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Ralph's friend, Ray Clark, for his faithful daily visits and trips to various medical appointments, and to nephew Bob Yeager, for his attentive daily check-in phone calls. The family also expresses thanks to Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care during this difficult time.

Family and friends may call one hour before the 11 a.m. service Friday, May 28, 2010, at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home in Mercersburg. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Heartland Hospice Services, 1200 Walnut Bottom Road, Suite 302, Carlisle, PA 17013; or to a charity of one's choice.
