Broadfording, Heritage to play for MDCC title

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Gabe Hirsch had two hits for Broadfording, which defeated Shalom Christian in a 2-1 pitchers' duel in the semifinals of the Mason Dixon Christian Conference Tournament on Monday.

Zack Snodderly and Joe Garrish combined on a five-hitter, with Garrish striking out seven in five innings of relief to get the win for the Lions.

Heritage 10, Grace Academy 8

Chad Lowry and Travis Barthalow each had two hits to pace Heritage Academy in its nine-inning win over Grace Academy in the MDCC semifinals.


The Eagles scored five runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie, and held a Grace rally to three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Kenny Frederickson had three hits -- falling a homer short of the cycle -- and three RBIs for the Knights. Sean Koontz added two hits and three RBIs, and Andy Michael and Zach Morgan had two hits each.

Heritage Academy 4, Calvary 1

Callie Butts scored two goals to lead Heritage Academy past Calvary Christian in the semifinals of the Mason Dixon Christian Conference Tournament.

Stephanie O'Brien had a goal and an assist, Rachel Clarke had a goal and Kara Stamper made six saves for the Eagles (11-1), who will travel to play Grace Academy in the championship game on Thursday at 4 p.m.


Strube earns scholarship

MIDDLETOWN, Md. --Middletown senior Chad Strube was selected as the Washington County Wrestling Officials scholarship recipient for the 2009-10 season. The scholarship is based on athletic and academic performance.

Strube had a 42-1 season record and was the Maryland Class 2A-1A state champion at 135 pounds. He was the state champ at 125 as a junior.

Strube was selected from wrestlers in Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland, Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan counties in West Virginia and Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania -- all areas which the association serves.


Spinnler fourth at climb

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Mike Spinnler, 51, of Hagerstown, placed fourth overall at the South Mountain Mass-Start Hill Climb on Sunday.

Spinnler, who competes for Antietam Velo Club/Team Hagerstown-Washington County Tourism, covered the 7.3 uphill miles in 27 minutes, 21 seconds.
