Jefferson boys win state track title

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Eastern Panhandle boys dominated at the West Virginia state championships Saturday at Laidley Field.

Jefferson scored 92 points to win the Class AAA team title, while Hedgesville was second (60) and Martinsburg was third (43).

Brandon Doughty won the 1,600-meter run in 4:14.30 and placed third in the 800 (1:56.66), after scoring points in the 3,200 and 4x800 relay Friday, to lead Jefferson. The Cougars also placed second in 4x100 (43.47) and 4x200 (1:30.46) and got second-place finishes from Dante Price in the 100 (11.03) and 200 (21.84).

Khiry Timbers had a huge day for Martinsburg, winning the 400 (48.24), placing second in the 800 (1:55.44) and anchoring the winning 4x400 (3:23.28).


Marquis Woods placed second in the 110 hurdles (14.43), Chris Deaner was second in the 300 hurdles (39.10) and Michael Walters was third in the long jump (20-10 1/2) for Hedgesville.

In Class AAA girls, Washington's Jasmyn Hosby was a star, winning the 100 (12.23) and 200 (25.43).

Taylor Brown won the 300 hurdles (44.61) and placed second in the 100 hurdles (15.09) for Jefferson, which finished second to Buckhannon-Upshur in the team standings.

Also for the Cougars, Andrea Nickerson was third in the 1,600 (5:11.97) and fourth in the 800 (2:21.12), and Kianna Weller was third in the shot put (37-0).

For Musselman, Tara Sharpe was second in the 100 (12.45) and Whitney Lewis was third in the 800 (2:18.36) and fourth in the 400 (59.67).

In Class AA boys, Berkeley Springs' John Mundey won the 1,600 (4:32.22) and placed fifth in the 800 (2:01.47), after getting wins in the 3,200 and 4x800 on Friday, to lead the Indians to a third-place team finish.


Hawks compete in 5,000

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Hagerstown Community College's Jeremiah Wilt placed 15th in 16:28.99 in the men's 5,000-meter run in hot and windy conditions Saturday at the NJCAA Division I championships.

HCC's Corey Centofonti finished 22nd in the race in 17:13.01.
