Hagerstown Community College

Deborah Bauer, transportation safety specialist at Hagerstown Community College, recently was licensed and certified as a driver education instructor by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).

Bauer completed her training over an eight-month period. The MVA training program included advanced classroom training, basic instructor training, advanced training behind the wheel and an apprentice license examination.

Bauer also is a certified MVA motorcycle instructor, earning that distinction in 2003.

Volvo Powertrain North America

John Hartman was named Employee of the Month for April at Volvo Powertrain North America.

Hartman was recognized by his colleagues for his leadership and team spirit. He leads by example and empowers his team to bring about the desired results in order to meet or exceed expectations.

Total Fitness Specialists Inc.

Shelby Patterson and Sheila Kurtz of Total Fitness Specialists Inc. recently attended the American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA) Fitness, Trainer, Sports and Mind Body Conference in Ocean City, Md.


Patterson and Kurtz participated in a variety of workshops that incorporated elements of strength, cardio, core, balance and agility. Some of the classes included Beach Boot Camp; Reaction Skills and Drills; Stability Ball and BOSU Balance Trainer; and Aquatic Exercise Workouts and Programming.

Patterson and Kurtz earned continuing education credits to maintain their personal training and group exercise certifications.

Passport Realty

David Lidz, a Realtor with Passport Realty, was among 18 graduates of the Maryland Association of Realtors' 10th annual Leadership Academy recently honored at ceremonies in Annapolis.

The academy offers an intensive curriculum designed around the development of leadership skills, communications, strategic planning, legislative and government affairs, and community involvement. Classes are conducted over seven months and stress the value of professional and personal commitment to professional, charitable and civic endeavors.

Melinda Pike, an esthetician at Bella Salon and Spa, recently attended the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa (IECSC) Conference in New York.

Classes that Pike attended included Beauty: Inside and Out; Innovations in Nutritional Skin Care; Energy Infusion: New Beauty Solutions for Mini Treatments for Wellness and Balance; The New Beauty Solutions, Part 2: Energy Ceuticals for Products for Spa and Home Use; and Bioelements: Age Positive Coaching.

The Columbia Group

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Robert G. Keane Jr., a member of its board of advisors of the Columbia Group, recently received the 2009 Harold E. Saunders Award at the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) gala.

Keane, a Keedysville resident, received the honor to recognize his lifetime of service and achievement for the U.S. Navy and ASNE.

Keane is president of Ship Design USA Inc. Before starting his own consulting firm, he worked at the Naval Sea Systems Command for 35 years. He was a member of the Senior Executive Service for 21 years and rose to the most senior executive leadership positions of chief naval architect of the Navy and the Navy's chief of ship design.

Keane graduated from Baltimore Poly and Johns Hopkins University, and received graduate degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan.
