Russell B. Keener, 95, of 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, Md., and formerly of 13210 Fairfax Road, Hagerstown, Md., passed away, Friday, May 21, 2010, at Ravenwood Assisted Living, Hagerstown.

Born Sunday, May 2, 1915, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Martin B. Keener and the late Lelia C. McCoy Keener. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris V. Eldridge Keener, in 1998.

He was a 1933 graduate of Hagerstown High School, serving on the reunion committee. He studied Engineering at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. He served with ROTC Unit-2nd Army. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of Trustees and Finance and president of Men's Bible Class. He was a building contractor, first with his father, later with his sons. He was a charter member of the Association of Builders and Construction, and the oldest member of the Washington County Home Builders Association, where he served as president, state director and national director. He was a charter member of the NAHB and ABC Cumberland Valley. He was past member Mason-Dixon Council of Boy Scouts of America, where he was chairman of camping, activities and buildings at Camp Sinoquippe, earning the Silver Beaver award. He served on the Washington County Advisory Board of Health and the Coffman Home of the Aged. He was chairman of the Washington County Parks and Recreation, during which time 12 parks (including Pen Mar) were completed. He was awarded Conservation Award with Pare Service. He was a member of the Washington County Facilities, Design & Review Committee. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 378; Friendship Lodge AF&AM 84; Tall Cedars of Lebanon No. 95; Scottish Rite of Free Masonary SJ USA; Ali Ghan Shrine of Cumberland; Fountain Head Country Club; three sportsmen clubs in Maryland and West Virginia, and past president Washington County at Pole Cat Hollow.


He is survived by one daughter, Lyn K. Totty of Hagerstown, Md.; three sons, Timothy B. Keener, Stuart B. Keener and Keith B. Keener, all of Hagerstown, Md.; two grandchildren, Christine J. McAfee and Christopher J. Keener, both of Hagerstown, Md.; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Wyand.

Services will be Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at 1 p.m., at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Robison officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday, May 24.

Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Md.
