The number nine was lucky for the homeless pets at the Humane Society of Washington County when Abby Mason celebrated her birthday.

Instead of asking for the usual goodies a 9-year-old girl would like, Abby asked for animal-related items that she could donate to the shelter.

On May 5, Abby and 18 of her friends celebrated her birthday in style at the new Monkey Joe's on Maryland Avenue in Hagerstown. They enjoyed playing on inflatable obstacle courses and slides and dined on pizza and cake.

"Abby really loves animals, but can't have any due to allergies," said her mom, Ann Mason. "She thought this would be a great way to help a number of the animals."

On May 8, Abby and her family brought in all the items that she received at the party.

Among the gifts that Abby donated were 85 pounds of dog food, 70 pounds of cat food, cat litter, dog treats, dog and cat toys. To see photos of Abby's party and donation, go to the Pawsatively Great Helpers section of the shelter's photo gallery on its website, and Community Helpers on its Facebook page.
