Cause of fire remains undetermined

May 21, 2010

MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. -- The cause of a May 5 fire that destroyed a market and pub along W.Va. 51 in Jefferson County remains undetermined, Assistant State Fire Marshal Patrick Barker said Friday.

Determining what caused the blaze at Crossroads Market and Pub at 4843 Middleway Pike has been complicated by the extensive damage and amount of debris, Barker said. The business continued to smolder for a couple of days, he said.

Officials estimated the fire caused $400,000 in damage.

Firefighters from a dozen companies in three states responded to the 3:10 a.m. blaze.

Owner Carroll J. Cubbage of Kearneysville, W.Va., could not be reached for comment Friday.
