On May 5, 12 employees of Valley Mall spent the morning at Western Maryland Hospital Center weeding, trimming and preparing flower beds for spring planting.

Several volunteered at the hospital last year for the United Way Day of Caring and returned this spring to help the hospital auxiliary's garden committee.

A group from Broadfording Christian Academy joined members of the committee April 16 to weed and mulch. Students and advisers from the high school volunteer each spring for a day of service. Each Friday afternoon in spring and fall, Marshall Street School students help maintain the gardens. Also, each year children from Fountaindale Elementary School donate and plant flowers for the hospital's entrance area.

The hospital center sits on approximately 12 acres and the gardens are maintained by volunteers led by a group of Master Gardeners. If you would like to support the hospital center gardens, contact Cindy Shaffer, volunteer coordinator, at 301-745-4650, or e-mail cshaffer@dhmh.state.md.us or Will Godwin, garden auxiliary chairperson, at willgodwin@myactv.net">willgodwin@myactv.net.
