Mail Call

May 21, 2010

"There's no doubt in anybody's mind, the Democrats control the government. They're in charge of spending money, they're in charge of all the laws. They just dominate it. There's no way the Republican Party or anybody else can do anything. So they're in complete control, with Obama at the head, telling what to do. Let's pray that socialism never takes hold with the ACLU behind it."

- Hagerstown

"Well, I guess we're gonna have to boycott the oil companies. The price of oil has come down $18 a barrel, and gasoline has not budged. I think the only thing they're going to understand is us consumers to get rough with them and buy gas on every other day or whatever we have to do. That's what usually make them budge. They must want to really, really, really get rich, on top of everything they're skimming off now."

- Sharpsburg

"People are complaining because the president has not made trips to Tennessee for the flooding, Mississippi for the tornadoes, or the Gulf due to the oil spill. However, others are complaining because he travels too much. No matter what he does it seems that 50 percent of you are not satisfied. I think he's doing a good job. My neighbor's house, which was not in foreclosure, sold in two months. Jobs are starting to pick up."

"I'm saying kudos to Pennsylvania voters for ousting Specter the defector from the Senate race."

- Smithsburg

"I hear people all the time say 'What in the world is Obama and his administration doing? Don't they see what they are doing to our country?' Yes, they know exactly what they are doing. They are not stupid, as it would seem. This is the fundamental change of our country that Obama promised. It is called the silent takeover, and it's time to take our country back."

- Clear Spring

"This is a reply to the Smithsburg caller who asked if it is legal to hunt a bear with a sword. I have to believe that if I were out in the woods and I saw a bear with a sword, I'd want to steer clear of him and not even think about trying to hunt that mean an animal."

- Boonsboro

"To Mr. William Gray: Thank you for your letter to the editor concerning the Almshouse. Your passion for the genealogical and historical significance of this wonderful structure impressed me greatly. Perhaps my one little voice gets overlooked, but there is strength in numbers and I stand with you 100 percent. Press on, Mr. Gray."

- Hagerstown

"I wonder why ice hockey is not shown on some of the regular sports channels. Cable prices have increased, and it seems to me ice hockey could be shown in some regular channels, especially now, when they are having playoffs."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to thank the county commissioners for their relief in the tax this year. All of us seniors I think can relax for another year and breathe a little better, and I want to just thank them."

- Hagerstown

"It's Wednesday, May 19, and there's in Mail Call somebody had called in about the fireworks at the baseball stadium. I live on Radcliffe Avenue right behind the stadium, and the fireworks, they could have them every night that they're home if they wanted to. It doesn't get old for me. It doesn't bother me. ... It brings crowds to the stadium. That generates revenue for the Suns, and I'm proud that we have the Hagerstown Suns in this city."

- Hagerstown

"The reason our southwest borders are overrun with illegals is our country has business, commerce and a way of life that our founding fathers and many men and women have fought and died for. We have made a great country, and now the illegals want to live the dream and don't want to have to earn it. Much easier to help yourself to a good life if you didn't have to fight for it, fight for your freedoms and build this country on blood, sweat."

- Samples Manor

"Last week I called Mail Call. ... I was curious why the media had not picked up on Mr. Obama's lack of a visit to Tennessee to see the damage done there, and I inadvertently associated that Louisville was in Tennessee. It was an accident on my part, really. I was thinking of something else. The fact stands, Mr. Obama has not witnessed the damage in Tennessee. My heart is not full of hate."

- Smithsburg

"The Smithsburg caller's question about hunting bears with a sword may seem silly, but I think his query is valid. I simply looked up Maryland laws concerning the carrying and use of knives. The law to me is subjective and vague. If you would like to hunt bears with a pen knife and are over 18 years of age, I think you would be lawful as far as the use of the weapon. As for the hunting bear laws are concerned, that's another matter. Good luck - I hope you have long arms."

- Cavetown

"I was just reading a summary of the health care bill, and found nothing earth-shattering to have created such opposition as there is. I think people are being misled by the political opposition, and also I guess most of us have insurance and we just don't care about people who don't. I hate to think that's true, but I do think it is."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"We received our census forms in March, filled them in and mailed them before April 1. Sunday morning, May 16, 2010, at 12:24 a.m. we received a phone call. Panic - death, injury, illness? No, it was the Census Bureau calling to take our census. We said we had sent it in and asked about the lateness of the call. She said she was calling from a different time zone. From where? India? Even in California it would have been 9:24 p.m. A little late for that kind of call."

- Kearneysville, W.Va.
