Memorial Day



The annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Smithsburg's Veterans Park Sunday, May 30, at 6 p.m. The featured speaker will be Lt. Col. Paula Penson from the District of Columbia Air National Guard. A canopy and chairs will be provided.

Film festival planned



Calling all local filmmakers - here is a chance to showcase your work.

The Smithsburg branch of Washington County Free Library and the English and Humanities Division of Hagerstown Community College have announced the fourth Wall Film Festival.

The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. at HCC in the Classroom Building Auditorium.

There will be cash awards presented to the top three films.

Rules for entry:

o Entries must be at most 15 minutes long (can be shorter)

o Entries must be submitted in DVD format

o Entries must include film director's name, phone number, mailing, and e-mail address (if applicable)

o Entries may be of any genre (horror theme is encouraged, but not required)

o No more than two entries per person

o Entries will not be returned

o All entries will be screened and selected prior to show date

Allow at least one month after you submit your entry to receive a reply. Deadline for submissions is Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Entries received after that date will not be considered. Mail entries to: Smithsburg Library, Attn: Ashley Hutson, P.O. Box 648, Smithsburg MD 21783.

You can also drop off your entry in person at the Smithsburg Library, 66 W. Water St.

All alumni party



The Smithsburg All Alumni Party will be Saturday, July 10, at 7 p.m. at Beaver Creek Country Club. Tickets cost $30 per person, which includes food, beer and DJ. All Smithsburg alumni, their spouses and teachers are invited.

Cascade Elementary



The school year is winding down. Tuesday, June 8, is the last day of school for students, which will be a 2 1/2-hour-early dismissal day. The Boys & Girls Club will close at 5:30 p.m. that day.

Smithsburg High bands perform at Disney World



Musical groups from Smithsburg High School performed at Walt Disney World in the Disney Performing Arts Program.

The Smithsburg High Concert band performed April 20 at Waterside Stage.

The Smithsburg High Marching Band played April 18 at Main Street, U.S.A.

The Smithsburg High Orchestra performed April 19 at Waterside Stage.
