USDA sets June 1 deadline to sign up for ag benefit

May 18, 2010

Colleen Cashell, executive director of USDA's Farm Service Agency in Washington County, announced a June 1 deadline to sign up for the Direct and Counter-cyclical Payment Program and Acreage Crop Revenue Election.

Producers can enroll at the USDA service center or online.USDA will not accept late-filed applications.

Producers must sign contracts annually under either program to receive commodity benefits.

The electronic service allows producers to choose payment options, assign crop shares, and sign and submit their contracts electronically from any computer with Internet access.

DCP payments are computed using the base acres and payment yields established for each farm that has a crop base history from previous years' participation.

ACRE began last year as an alternative to traditional DCP payments. The alternative provides eligible producers a state-level revenue guarantee, based on the five-year state Olympic average yield and the two-year national average price. ACRE payments are made when both state- and farm-level triggers are met. By participating in ACRE, producers elect to forgo counter-cyclical payments.
